A textbook sat upon her desk, ignored in preference for a photograph which she held in her hands. It showed herself and her friends Minako, Rei, Makoto, and Usagi standing in front of a Ferris wheel. She was smiling happily, Minako was grinning and making a "V" sign at the camera, Makoto had her arms crossed and was smiling smugly, while Usagi... Usagi hung off the neck of her boyfriend, Mamoru. `Usagi's so lucky...' she mused to herself. With another wistful sigh, Ami replaced the framed photograph on the shelf above her desk and turned to look out her window for a long moment before returning her attention to her textbook. Her hopes for further study were interrupted by the loud closing of the front door. "I'm home, Ami!" came her mother's voice, and with a smile Ami pushed herself back from the desk and stood to go and greet her mother. Nodoka Mizuno, stepping into the main living room of their apartment after doffing her shoes in the small genkan immediately by the front door, smiled tiredly as her daughter entered the living room. "Ami, dear, how was your day?" Ami returned her mother's smile. "It was fine, mother, a pretty normal day. Oh, I went out with Usagi- chan, Mina-chan, and Mako-chan to the arcade for a little while after school, so I haven't finished my homework yet." Nodoka stepped over to Ami and gave her a maternal hug. "That's lovely, dear. You study so hard, it's wonderful that you spend some time with your friends as well." Breaking the embrace, she stepped over to the small side table near the door which was bare save a small stack of letters and brochures. "Is this today's mail?" "Yes. There's a letter from someone." Interest tinged her voice. "Thank you, dear." Nodoka picked up the small pile of letters, leaving the three advertising flyers sitting on the table. The first two letters were a bank statement and the bi-monthly power bill, but the third was beautifully calligraphed, the envelope appearing skilfully hand-made. She could see why it would have attracted Ami's attention. "Whatever could this be?" she mused under her breath as she tore open the flap at the narrow end of the envelope and drew out the stiff pages enclosed therein. Ami watched her curiously, then darted over in alarm as paper fell from her mother's suddenly-nerveless fingers and she seemed ready to collapse. A huge grin lit up Nodoka's face as she turned Ami's gesture of support into an ecstatic embrace. "What is it, mother?" "Ranma's coming home," she breathed ecstatically. "Ranma! Oh, my son, you're coming home!" Ami stared at Nodoka, aghast. "R-ranma? I have a *brother*?" * * * Dear Mother, I write with happy news. My training here is finished and my master has suggested that I should spend some time with my family. He said I should become used to the company of those of my own age as well as gaining experience to temper the knowledge I have gained under him. I will therefore be returning home as soon as possible. I expect to arrive mid-afternoon on Saturday the fourteenth. I very much look forward to seeing you, and hope that after all these years I am welcome in your home. I have much to tell you. Your dutiful son, Ranma. * * * "What's wrong, Ami-chan? You've been out of it all morning." Ami started as she was jerked out of her speculation by the touch of Usagi's hand on her shoulder. It was the end of second class, and the teacher had left the classroom while Ami was distracted. Students started chatting, some moving around as they waited for the next teacher to arrive, while outside the sun shone invitingly from a sky streaked with high, wispy cirrus clouds. "Oh, Usagi-chan, I'm sorry," said Ami as she concentrated on the here and now. "What did you want?" "What's up?" repeated Usagi. "It's not like you to not pay attention in class?" "I..." Ami looked around at their fellow students. "Can we talk about this at lunch, Usagi-chan? It's a long story." "Sure! But don't worry, Ami-chan! I'm sure it'll work out fine, whatever it is." "Oh, it's nothing bad, Usagi-chan," said Ami. She frantically waved her hands in denial, fending off the waves of sympathy coming from her friend. "It's just that after all these years, Mother finally tells me that I've got a brother coming." "Ohh, what wonderful news! Who's the father? When will he be born? Will she be getting married? Do you like your new step-father?" Ami blushed furiously as she noticed that she was suddenly the centre of attention of the classroom. "Mother says he's about my age," she protested. "I've never met him. I didn't even know he existed until last night!" "Oh, how *radical*," commented one girl from the back of the ring which now surrounded Ami and Usagi. "Yes, how free-spirited your mother must be," said another. Ami's blush turned hot pink as she frantically flapped her hands. "No, no, my *brother*! My *brother* is about my age!" There was a pause, a kind of disappointed quiet. Then... "Wow, will he be coming here?" "Is he good-looking?" "Do you think you could introduce me, Ami-chan?" "Cool, I wonder if he's a stud?" Blushing strawberry pink once more, Ami buried her head in her hands and shook her head ruefully as she noted Usagi leading the charge of enthusiastic questions. Having friends was not, it seemed, an unalloyed pleasure. Still, despite wishing with all her heart that the teacher for the next lesson would walk in the door and rescue her, she could not help but smile at Usagi's antics. * * * The clock on the wall ticked loudly as Ami sat in the living room of the apartment she shared with her mother. She was unquiet, shifting nervously even as she attempted to distract herself with a good book on recent research into astrophysics. Nearby, her mother knelt on a large cushion on the floor. She looked very much as though she wanted to be in her best kimono and obi, but instead she wore her working clothes - a sharply-pressed skirt of modest length and a comfortable white long-sleeved blouse. She would have to leave shortly to get to the hospital on time to begin her shift, and Ami was beginning to worry that Ranma would not arrive in time before Nodoka had to leave. *BZZZT!* The doorbell was shockingly loud, and Ami found herself jerking to her feet in anticipation. Still, she was slow compared to Nodoka, who appeared to teleport to the door. With a twist and a heave, she flung it open. A boy stood there, dressed in an ebony high-collared suit which resembled a school uniform in a number of ways except that it appeared to be made from raw silk. Against that dark background, this somewhat tanned skin of his face and hands stood out in stark comparison, framed by long but fairly normal black hair pulled back into ponytail. He stood stock still, just staring at Nodoka, and finally it was Nodoka who broke the silence. "R-ranma? Is that you, my son?" "Mother?" Nodoka glomped an amazed. Ranma, dragging him inside. "Oh, Ranma! It's been so long, it's been so long." Hesitantly, Ranma returned the embrace. Ami saw a smile grow on his lips. "Oh, Ranma, oh, Ranma," she repeated. "Mother, it's so nice to be home." After another long moment, Nodoka broke the embrace and gestured to Ami. "Ranma, this is your sister Ami. You would not remember her; I adopted her after her parents were killed when she was seven. She's sixteen now, the same age as you." Ami bowed at Ranma, and was pleased to see him bow formally to her in reply. "How do you do. A pleasure do meet you," she said, mouthing the ritual phrases of meeting.
