EXPERIENCE:
Feb 96 - Current Newberry College, Newberry, SC
- Hired as a member of permanent staff as Network Administrator for the
College
- Responsible for twenty-three Windows NT Servers and over two hundred and sixty
Windows 95 and Windows NT Workstation client systems supporting approximately
1000 users.
- Designed, configured and implemented a campus-wide network from the ground-up. This
involved:
- Detailing plans for a fiber-optic backbone to connect all the educational and
administrative buildings on the campus, as well as creating wiring diagrams for each of
the buildings
- Contracting out the laying and termination of all fiber runs
- Personally running most of the Category 5 UTP connections into offices and classrooms
- Designing an NT domain structure that would allow secure access within departments but
also allow global access to various services and devices on the network
- Properly distributing a combination of managed hubs and 10/100 Cisco auto-sensing
switches to provide for maximum bandwidth availability to all nodes along the backbone

- Implemented Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions in concert with Microsoft
Internet Information Server 4.0 to provide a simplified interface for students and faculty
to author and maintain individual as well as departmental websites.
- Designed SQL-based (static) web databases and all necessary webpages to allow for
warehousing and searching of campus e-mail addresses, student website URLs and tutoring
schedules
- Co-created a church web community (http://elca.newberrynet.com)
consisting of websites either authored by my co-workers and myself or by members of the
congregations. An SQL database was also created to contain the URLs of all hosted sites,
sorted by Synod. Membership in the web community was restricted to all Churches which are
members of the Synods of the ELCA that support Newberry College
- Implemented and/or co-created other commercial and non-commercial websites:
- Implemented and managed the campus NNTP and POP3/SMTP servers.
- Installed and administered the Sequitur® Corporation College Admissions package
- Participated in the Y2K upgrade plan to replace our legacy System/36 minicomputer with a
client/server-based integrated software system by CMDS
- Designed and implemented the current layout of two multimedia computer teaching labs
- Co-authored the campus policy manual for computer and network usage
- Implemented a Remote Access Dial-in Network solution to provide dormitory students with
access to the campus network
- Adjunct faculty member during the Spring 1998 semester. Taught CSC-330 An
Introduction to Assembly Language Programming on the PC. In order to teach this
course I had to develop the course curriculum and create presentations using Microsoft
Powerpoint
- Adjunct faculty member during the Spring 2000 semester. Taught CSC-410 Computer
Organization and Architecture. In order to teach this course I again had to
develop the course curriculum and create presentations using Microsoft Powerpoint as well
as a web-based interface which was used in lieu of a textbook
- Implemented an on-line public access catalog for the College Library utilizing the SIRSI
Library Automation System
- Installed a test server using Red Hat Linux v5.2 to explore possible uses of a
Unix-based system for:
- mailing lists
- student shell accounts
- Automation of SQL database information interchange between the Admissions Sequitur
system and the CMDS Integrated Services package through the use of Perl scripting.
- Using SAMBA as an alternative means of expanding the size of the NT domain structures
without having to purchase additional copies of Windows NT 4.0
May 94-Nov. 95 AT&T Global Information Solutions/NCR, West Columbia, SC
- Primary responsibility was to provide phone support to customers with
NCR/AT&T hardware and Microsoft® software, particularly Windows NT, and
NTAS
- Successfully completed training on how to support customers over the phone, as well as
how to support the Windows NT operating system.
- Completed extensive training on all of the high-end hardware manufactured under the NCR
label, consisting mainly of SMP server systems.
- Provided solutions through person-to-person phone coverage to a variety of problems that
occur in customer systems.
- Created, updated and maintained a free-access BBS (bulletin board service) which allowed
customers dial-in access to a library of all Microsoft® operating system patches and NCR
firmware upgrades.
- In addition to Windows NT support, was one of two people in the entire support
center requested to provide support for OS/2 for all versions at and above 2.0 on
all NCR hardware platforms.
1993-1994 Computer Consulting Group, Columbia, SC
- Worked under 3 contracts while at this organization (contracts listed
below):
1994 AT&T Global Information Solutions/NCR, West Columbia, SC
- Hired full time by AT&T GIS at end of four-month contract.
1994 Roger Milliken and Company, Inc., Spartanburg, SC
- Hired on a two-month assignment to help the Systems Support group maintain
their vast inventory of computer systems.
1993-1994 Procter and Gamble, Greenville, SC
- Hired on a six-month contract, which was extended one month.
- Performed hardware and software maintenance of all on-site systems.
Installed network stations utilizing Ungermann-Bass® LAN cards and routers.
- Created an inventory system with Microsoft® Excel macros to track asset tagging
of computer parts and help define expenditures within departments.
1991-1993 E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co., Inc. Florence, SC
- Acted as a consultant to users on all software packages used on site.
- Solely responsible for the maintenance of over 250 IBM PS/2 systems and IBM compatible
clone systems (including software and hardware).
- Assisted in maintaining the corporate network by:
- installing and configuring DECNet network hardware,
- installing and configuring Digital® Pathworks for DOS v4.2 for new clients,
- creating and splicing network cabling for coaxial and Category 5 UTP connections.
- Managed an inventory database of all computer systems and terminals.
- Instituted a software auditing system to prevent piracy and help the site conform to
federal copyright laws and regulations.
